HeroQuest Homebrew: Finishing Touches

Finishing Touches

Finishing touches are just as important as anything else. They add an extremely personal "touch" to my homebrew game, and they are things that get used over and over, so it justifies the extra time to make sure they look great!

The Combat Dice

I started with some simple wood craft cubes which I bought from a dollar store for, you guessed it, a dollar. If you are looking for the exact ones I used, the green labeled pack (Krafty Kids brand) were much better. I ended up tossing the black labeled pack because the wood was too soft, and many cuts were slanted and rough, making them imperfect cubes.

Off to the sanding table to shape the cubes. Using a couple pieces of wood and c-clamps as a guide, I sanded off the edges and corners, attempting to get the look I pictured in my head.

Here are four different styles I tried using different depths and corner rolling, eventually deciding on the 3rd cube as my dice shape of choice.

Next up was painting the cubes. Using coloured dice can be a controversial topic, but I decided since I'm making my own dice, I might as well play around with using colours...

I used a combo of different coloured sets I had seen around the internet, tayloring them for use with my set of custom heroes and house rules. Simple Acryllic paint used here, with the non-white cubes getting a light dry-brush of a lighter shade for a slightly worn look, and to show off the wood texture, which I like (which you will see below).

Bring forth the Silhouette Cameo! This little beauty can cut finely detailed decals into vynyl sheets like nobody's business! Luckily for me, my Mother is quite a crafty lady, and happens to own this wonderful machine. So after finding some suitable images and some custom Photoshop editing, I headed to my parents house, flash drive in hand loaded up with .png images of my designs, and began the cutting process. (The picture above is a retail marketing photo for the Cameo)

The process of transfering the vynyl cutouts to the dice is quite time consuming and meticulous. It is tough to keep them centered and straight, but patience is something I have a ton of, so I didn't mind too much. A sharp crafting blade and pieces of clear adhesive sheet help a lot.

A few hours and cramped fingers later, all sides have symbols! Then I do it again 4 more times...

A quick spray with some Clear Matte Finish (about $10 a can), and the dice are ready to roll!

Again, a custom distribution of symbols to work with my Homebrew.

Here's what the look like strewn about on my custom built board.

And one last glamour shot showing off my hard work... Overall I am very happy with how they turned out. I do plan on doing a couple more sets that are unpainted. I like the natural wood grain and think they would look sharp instead of the white dice, so I will post pics when they are finished.
